Leftover Projects, part 2--Tiny Sunflower Sue Quilt

Some time ago, I became quite daring and actually used some scraps from my great-grandma's quilt scrap box to start this little Grandma Tribute quilt. My Grandma Hilda loved to applique Sunflower Sue, and since the scraps are from my Grandma Genevieve and her mother, Great-Grandma Ella, it's my tribute to grandmas.

The blocks are 4" by4"--the pieces I chose were just big enough to re-cut into tiny dresses, and it was fun choosing scraps of solids to make each hat and shoes. I hand appliqued each Sue, and outlined each with a black running stitch. The back, sashing, and binding are also from the scrap box. Hand quilting seemed appropriate, since the grandmas would have been appalled by machine quilting. (Things have changed, Grandmas--your should see us now!)

I used Warm and White batting, and it washed up beautifully, finished at last. I think this little quilt is for MY old doll!

  1. Where did you find a sun bonnet that small. Did you just photocopy it smaller. I LOVE this little quilt. I didn't comment on the Scottie dog quilt but that brought back memories of my grandmther who was the greatest quilter I know. Everything ws hand done perfectly. She always made the baby boys in the family Scottie dog quilts. Thanks for the memories.

  3. For the little pattern, I copied a Sue from my own Grandma quilt. I spread the quilt on the bed and put paper under a square, then poked along the seam lines into the mattress with a pin. I connected the pin holes on the paper with a pencil, and used a copier to reduce the pieces, then added seam allowances.

  4. Beautiful little quilt! I had a Sunbonnet Sue quilt, used it as a girl, took it off to college - it still keeps me warm sometimes when I visit parents. You are so right anout the snuggliness of real cotton, as you mentioned in more recent post.

  5. I just found your blog from your daughters blog. She's awesome. Thanks so much for sharing this Sunbonnet Sue Quilt. I remember always grabbing a sunbonnet quilt while at my grandmother's I always wanted that quilt. She is now gone and I assume another family member now has it. I would love to make one of these. Thanks for the memories and Love your blog. I'm becoming a follower
